The Kicker rock known locally as Leon Dormido is one of the iconic geological formation in the Galapagos. Impressive wildlife lives under this eroted parasitic volcano. Is one of the few places where you can see schools of hammerhead sharks just during snorkel. The second site is Manglesito, where you have a beautiful beach and a mangrove area ideal for birdwatching.

Description

Kicker rock was a ancient tuff cone, that probably was form 2.5 millions years ago, the straight lines. You can see two channel where the ocean had manage to go through. Nearby the vertical walls beautiful colors of sponges, anemonas and other marine creatures appear. In some parts you can see the sand bottom in others, just blue, large fish crossing busy, some sea turtles or rays also pass by. The price is the hammerhead shark school that appear in large numbers, from the surface they seem small, but as they come closer. On the rock blue footed bobies and sea lions rest, further up to the west there is an small colony of Nazca boobies and on the trees some frigate birds. The whole experience here is almost surreal. The next visit in on a sandy beach with a brackish lagoon surrounded by mangrove, here you can play with the waves, rest on the beach or go to birdwatch on the lagoon.

Hammerhead sharks

Sharks are perhaps one of the most ancient fish in our ocean, among this group they have common characteristics like the aerodynamic scales, very small that is impossible to distinguish to the naked eye, when you touch in the right direction you feel like sandpaper. Other important adaptation is the Lorensini fossetts that allow them to feel electromagnetic fields. This organ is very important and highly dense on the hammerheads front and bottom of the head since most of them are bottom feeders using the head like a metal detector, can discover their preys (rays, flounder and sole fish), in dark and muddy bottoms.

Nazca booby

The Nazca booby or Nazca gannet is a seabird that forms colonies on the islands where it lives. It has yellow irises, a pinkish-orange bill, blackish mask-like facial skin, and gray legs. Adults have white plumage with black wing and tail covers.

Poison apple tree “Manzanillo”

This native tree is commonly found in the coastal area, it can produce several green light little apples with a sweet odor, don’t let the appearance of these fruits to fool you. The fruits are toxic as well as the whole tree, so avoid touching or hanging cloth on the branches. It is very important to keep on eyes on kids, just the sab can produce a rash or o chemical burn. They produce generous shade, and if you are not to sensitive is ok to sit underneath. But if is raining, better to go somewhere else.

Galapagos Sea Lions

The Galapagos sea lion is widely distributed in the archipelago, however the biggest breeding colonies are located in San Cristobal island. The sea lion population was reduce over 50%. The sea lions can include more than 34 species of fish plus octopus and even squids. The breeding success is estimate one young every two years. The females never share milk or adopt, some pups had been seen waiting for the females to fall asleep to steal milk, something that can put their lives in threat.

Blue Footed Booby

The word booby refers to clown like feet, this colorful pair call the attention of the tourist but mainly the other bobies, it is a way to show how healthy and well fit they are. The pigments that reflect this blue turquoise color are inclose inside of particular feet cells, when the cells are not complete turgent or immature, the pigment decrease or won't be enough and the color turn pale green. If the cells are weak, the pigment get darker, and the color is dark purple-blue. When the cells are turgents and the pigment well distributed, the result is a bright turquoise which is the best color to breed.

The departures are from the Pato Principal of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno where you can get an auxiliary boat to get on board a small yacht. Then you will leave 30 minutes to get to Leon Dormido (Kicker Rock), where you can snorkel to observe hammerhead sharks and other marine species. After the visit, you return to the boat, you will serve yourself lunch and prepare to head towards Manglesito beach to enjoy its beautiful sand and crystal-clear water. Finally, you will sail for approximately 40 minutes back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.


Travel Tip

To have a better experience during this tour, we recommend for this day to wear comfortable cloth, hiking shoes, long sleeve shirt, and bring a jacket or a windbreaker. Also don’t forget your camera and sun protection
