This endemic species of the Galapagos Islands is the largest species of tortoise that exists on Earth. It can weigh up to 300 kg and is believed to live around 100 years. They feed on cactus fruits, herbs, leaves, and lichens. They have no natural predators, but their eggs and hatchlings are preyed upon by introduced species such as pigs, rats, and dogs; one of the reasons why they are currently in danger of extinction.

They are two large depressions of volcanic material, on the Puerto Ayora-Canal de Itabaca highway. It’s the only place on the island where is the Scalesia Tree Forest. Mosses, ferns and orchids also abound in this place, as well as certain species of Galapagos finches and the witch bird, the most prominent bird in the upper parts of the islands.

These tunnels are common in the Galapagos Islands. While the volcano is erupting the lava that flows from it forms rivers that spread around. The surface of these rivers cools faster than the inner flow that rushes down the hill fast. When there is no more lava coming out of the volcano an empty tube is left behind with a very solid outside crust.
