This a half day tour, Lobos Island is a sea lion colony that is on the southwestern coast of San Cristobal, 40 minutes away from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Ochoa Beach is on the coast of San Cristobal 10 minutes to the south of Isla Lobos.In this tour you will have a walk on Isla Lobos to enjoy the wildlife (sea lions, blue footed boobies, frigate birds, pelikans, etc) also to snorkel in a bay nearby and to swim or just to enjoy a nice beach.

Description

The navigation start from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno towards the western side of the island, it takes about 45 minutes to reach Lobos Island, there you will have a dry landing on a cement duck. The walk takes about one hour, where you will enjoy to see several species of sea birds and sea lions, the trail is irregular and includes several boulders. Once on board, you will get prepare to go to snorkel on a bay on San Cristobal island, here you can find sea lions, white tip sharks, sea turtles, rays and colorful fishes. While you have lunch on board you will sail to Ochoa Beach, where you will have a wet landing. On this beach, you can swim, have a second snorkel or just relax on the beach with the company of sea lions and the San Cristóbal mockingbird. Among the coastal vegetation you will have the poison apple tree (manzanillo) be aware since its fruits are poison for us.

Galapagos Sea Lions

The Galapagos sea lion is widely distributed in the archipelago, however the biggest breeding colonies are located in San Cristobal island. The sea lion population was reduce over 50%. The sea lions can include more than 34 species of fish plus octopus and even squids. The breeding success is estimate one young every two years. The females never share milk or adopt, some pups had been seen waiting for the females to fall asleep to steal milk, something that can put their lives in threat.

Blue Footed Booby

The word booby refers to clown like feet, this colorful pair call the attention of the tourist but mainly the other bobies, it is a way to show how healthy and well fit they are. The pigments that reflect this blue turquoise color are inclose inside of particular feet cells, when the cells are not complete turgent or immature, the pigment decrease or won't be enough and the color turn pale green. If the cells are weak, the pigment get darker, and the color is dark purple-blue. When the cells are turgents and the pigment well distributed, the result is a bright turquoise which is the best color to breed.

Poison apple tree “Manzanillo”

This native tree is commonly found in the coastal area, it can produce several green light little apples with a sweet odor, don’t let the appearance of these fruits to fool you. The fruits are toxic as well as the whole tree, so avoid touching or hanging cloth on the branches. They produce generous shade, and if you are not to sensitive is ok to sit underneath. But if is raining, better to go somewhere else.

The tortoises and some bird eat this fruits without a problem. Actually is one of the main food for giant tortoises when they migrate to the arid parts of the islands.

Ochoa Beach

Ochoa Beach is a beautiful white beach, with calm waters, safe for bathing and a good place to practice snorkeling, an excellent place for landscape photography. It is the habitat of blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, turtles, sea lions, tropical fish and Galapagos sea lions. In addition, it has a brackish lagoon, where flamingos can occasionally be seen. It is a site that is used by cruise ships that start or end their tours in San Cristóbal. What makes this site special is the coexistence between man and nature.

The departures is from the Main Duck of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno where you get a dinghy to get on board of an small yacht. Then you will sale 40 minutes to get Lobos Island, where you disembark to hike for about 1 hour. After the visit you get back on the boat and get ready to snorkel in a bay in front of the islet. Then you will have a lunch on board before you second visit a wet landing in Ochoa Beach. Finally you will sail for 35 minutes approx back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.


Travel Tip

We recommend for this day to wear comfortable cloth, hiking shoes, long sleeve shirt, and bring a jacket or a windbreaker. Also don’t forget your camera and sun protection.
