Description
Visit the jewels of Isabela in just two days. Don’t miss the amazing snorkle in The Tunnels and hike up the incredible Sierra Negra.
The Tunnels consist of rocky formations – a series of arcs and tunnels underneath and above the water made by the flow of lava into the ocean. The calm, clear and shallow waters attract a great variety of sea animals and provide the perfect conditions for snorkeling. Afterwards, a short hike on the black and rough volcanic rock that welcomes the island birds allows visitors to see the different species close up on their nests and resting places.
The Sierra Negra Volcano is located 30min away from town, Puerto Villamil. It is the only volcano that can be hiked up to its crater in the islands, with no restrictions but to be in the company of a certified naturalist guide. We will hike the 12km (7,5 miles) trail starting from the National Park access control. It is a medium difficulty trail with a fare slope.

Galapagos Pinguin
This bird might look clumsy walking on the rock, short legs and slippery surfaces can be a perfect combination for falling, especially for young unexperice pinguins. The adult knows most of the tricks, jumping, sliding or walking sideway, but an unexpected wave or a sea lion can produce a falling. But underwater is another story, they “flight” gracefully and fast, changing directions and catching elusive fish, some times alone, or in group. Then a break on the surface of the water to breath or to rest. They nest on small cracks or lava tubes near to the shoreline, to avoid long walks.

Sierra Negra Volcano
Los Tunnels Tour
Early Morning start. You have to be at the pier at 6:30am. You will board a ferry to Isabela. Once in Isabela you will be taken to the hotel to check in. The tour operator will pick you up from the hotel and take you to try on your wetsuit and snorkeling gear. A van will take you to the port where a small boat will be waiting for you. Make sure you bring along a windbreaker jacket and sunscreen. After a 45 minute drive you will reach Los Tuneles. The tour can start with the snorkeling or the hike on the rocky surface, whichever adventure you embark on first will not alter the resulting the experience.
Sierra Negra Volcano
The Operator will pick you up at your hotel early in the morning to start our journey. You will meet the guide and ride for about 30 – 40 min uphill. You’ll disembark when you arrive to the park control entrance. From there you will start the 12km (7,5 miles) trail.
The guide most likely will ask the group to consider either going to “Volcan Chico” or up to the border of the Crater, democracy rules and the most voted will be taken. The guide will give you a small lunch on the way. The return will have the same logistics down the hill.
Travel Tip
Make sure you get some breakfast before this activity, although, if you think you can get dizzy, don’t eat much before this adventure.
The weather in the islands is generally warm but the water can get really chilly in the rainy season (starting in July through to December, the coldest temperatures being around September). Make sure you bring your windbreaker jacket for the boat ride. This is the perfect opportunity to bring along underwater cameras and get some award-winning shots of the marine life.
The Sierra Negra Tour goes from sea level to an altitude of 1100mts (3600 ft), it involves fairly steep climbing. The hike will last about 3 – 4h.
